With many entries already coming in for the annual wedding photography giveaway, I wanted to take a few moments to talk more about why I do the giveaway! The truth is there are two main factors about the giveaway that set it apart from most other wedding photography giveaways you may know of. So for all you newly engaged couples browsing the web for any wedding photography giveaway you can find, I’d love to take this opportunity to tell you why I would love to have your entry for the 2014 Themba Imagery annual wedding photography giveaway!
1. I believe in selecting a couple that I feel truly embodies the message of Themba Imagery: HOPE
I began Themba Imagery after I returned from a volunteer trip to South Africa, where I discovered that the element of hope played a huge factor in my passion for photography. For years I had just taken photos for fun on my mom’s old Pentax – I was amazed by the magic of photography but I didn’t feel the connection with what I was photographing. I took pictures of my dog, butterflies in my mother’s garden, portraits of my friends, and even got into live music photography for a bit. But my trip to South Africa helped me realize the magic and power of a photograph – how it can truly provide hope in so many situations, and for so many people. In South Africa, it was children seeing a photo of them for the first time that made me feel the power of HOPE in photography. Now – almost 5 years later – one of the many things I find HOPE in, is a love story.
How exactly do I find hope in love stories? That’s simple – every love story is unique!
Maybe it was how you two met – were you running early for work one morning and decided to stop at coffee shop and bumped into your future fiancée there?
Maybe it was how your relationship grew over time – were you two friends for years then realized on a random Wednesday you enjoyed each other’s company so much you never wanted to be apart?
Maybe it is how you’ve overcome obstacles together – did you lose a family member or friend and your spouse was there to help mend your broken heart?
Maybe it is because of the next chapter you have planned – are you thinking of planning a surprise wedding? Or considering a destination wedding with your closest friends and family?
Our first annual giveaway winners were Sara and James who shared their love story – one filled with love that survived even being thousands of miles apart. Last year, our winners were La’Tesha and Terrance who shared their love story – filled with selflessness and compassion for others more than themselves.
This year I hope to find another couple whose love story is filled with hope as well. There are so many unique stories of how people fall in love, how their relationships grow, and even the battles they have to overcome to get to this amazing next chapter in their lives.
2. I understand the financial hardships wedding planning many couples face
Planning a wedding is emotional – both for the fact that you are excited to be marrying your fiancée who makes your heart skip a few beats…and the butterflies in your stomach every time you kiss! But also for the unfortunate stress that also comes with planning your dream wedding. One of the biggest hardships most couples face when planning their dream wedding is their budget. Money money money… Oh money! How it also can make your heart skip a few beats…but instead of butterflies you often get knots in your stomach when thinking about it! I understand not every engaged couple has the blessing of a large budget. But should you sacrifice your wedding memories strictly because you think your budget won’t allow it? Absolutely NOT!
Every newly engaged couple will have a unique, and often times sensitive financial situation:
Maybe you are paying for the entire wedding yourselves – You and your fiancée have to take on the financial responsibility of the entire wedding out of your own personal savings.
Maybe your family members will be assisting with the costs, but you are worried about the financial burden on them – Even though your parents will be assisting, you are worried the growing cost may be too much for them to handle with current bills they may be facing (such as medical bills for a ailing family member etc).
Maybe you’ve experienced a recent family tragedy or unexpected financial loss – As important as your wedding day is, if you’ve recently had a family emergency such as an ailing parent or if you’ve just lost your job…your original budget may have shifted dramatically.
One of our wedding photography giveaway winners confessed if they didn’t win the giveaway they wouldn’t have been able to have a photographer at their wedding – at all! I was honored to capture their day and couldn’t have imagined them not having the photos to look back on all the beautiful moments of their special day.
But remember this, the giveaway is not just about winning something for free – it’s about sharing your unique love story. It’s about wanting to climb the highest mountain and cheer your love for your fiancée. It’s about overcoming obstacles – emotionally, financially and even physically. It’s about providing HOPE.
